IPA Convention 2010

The Indian Congress of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences - 2010 and Indian Pharmaceutical Association Convention - 2010 was organized on 13th & 14th March, 2010, in Chennai by Indian Pharmaceutical Association through its Tamilnadu State branch. The venue of the Program was Sri Ramachandra University, Porur, Chennai. The Theme of the Convention was “INDIA – SURGING FORWARD AS THE GLOBAL PHARMA DESTINATION”.

The Chairman of the LOC was Mr. S. V. Veerramani, the Organizing secretary was Mr. J. Jayaseelan, Treasurer was Mr. Rajesh Bhandary. The LOC had four Co-Chairmen Mr. R. Narayanaswamy, Mr. M M Yousuf, Mr. R. Sabapathy, Dr. V. Ravichandran, along with 22 Task Committees. The scientific program was coordinated by National Scientific Convener Dr. T. K Ravi. The LOC was guided by Dr. B. Suresh, Prof. K. Chinnaswamy and IPA Coordinator Mr. C. Gopalakrishna Murty and Seven Advisory Committee members.

Two pre-Convention workshops were organized on 12th & 13th March; the first one was Satellite workshop on “Stability Testing for global submission” organized by IPA Regulatory Affairs Division & IPA Tamil Nadu branch in association with American Association Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS). Dr. Subash Mandal & Mr. J. Jayaseelan were the coordinators of this workshop which covered many useful topics including Pharmaceutical Stability Testing: Scientific basis and Global Regulatory Requirements, Optimizing Stability Program in support Drug Development Process, Strategies for developing a stability indicating method, Validation of Stability Indicating Methods, I mpact of Pharmaceutical and Biopharmaceutical Stability on the Specifications for Drug Substances and Drug Product was presented. International speakers from AAPS included Dr.Ravi Harapanhalli, Parexal Consulting USA, Dr.Charanjeet Jassal, Pfizer USA, Dr.Prabu Nambiar, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. USA Ms. Kim Huynh-Ba from Pharmalytik, USA & Mr.Saji Thomas, Par Pharmaceuticals, USA. The second workshop was organized jointly with Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (CPA) on “Pharmacists preparing to face challenges in HIV/AIDS”. Ms. Betty Falconbridge, CPA & Mr. Raj Vaidya, Chairman, CPD, IPA were the coordinators of the workshop that had many expert speakers including Dr Joseph Amuzu, Health Adviser at the Commonwealth Secretariat, London, Mr. Ivan Kotze, Dr. S. P. Thyagarajan, Pro-chancellor of Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai, Sri Ramachandra Unvierstity & Mrs. Manjiri Gharat. Many useful topics like Govt. policy on availability of antiretroviral drugs in India – for general, and for stopping Mother-To-Child Transmission , Role of Pharmacist in HIV/AIDS & TB - In Hospital & Community Pharmacy, View of Global strategies in HIV & MCH care – And the Role of the Pharmacists.Management & leadership role of Pharmacists in HIV & MCH care – towards achieving Millenium Development Goals 4, 5 &6., Continuing Education of Pharmacists to take leadership in care of HIV/AIDS & MCH (Quality Improvement, Advocacy)., Strategies for developing Pharmacists Role in HIV & MCH care – hospital and community were covered in the workshop.

Padmashri. Dr. Sivathanu Pillai Chief Controller, Research & Development DRDO, Ministry of Defence, New Delhi, was the Chief Guest of the inauguration ceremony of the Convention. In his address, Dr. Pillai exhorted the pharma industry to prepare themselves to make India win the number one position in production, sale and export of pharmaceutical products in another five years. IPA President, Dr. B. Suresh, CEO of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, Dr Henri Manasse, Vice President of International Pharmaceutical Federation, P. D. Sheth, President of the Federation of Asian Pharmaceutical Association, Dr. Soo Ja Nam, Pro-chancellor of Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai, Dr. S. P. Thyagarajan, Deputy DCGI, V. G. Somani, Hon. Gen. Secretary of IPA S. D. Joag, Deputy Drugs Controller of Tamil Nadu, M. M. Yousuf, Chairman of Local Organizing Committee S. V. Veeramani, and Secretary of LOC, J. Jayaseelan also spoke during the function. Principal Secretary of Tamil Nadu Healthcare & Family Planning, V. K. Subburaju released the souvenir.

Three streams of lectures were conducted during the Convention. The theme of STREAM I was Pharma Industry - Emerging Technologies & Regulations which covered topics like Developing India as global Outsourcing base for manufacturing, Indian Pharma Industries - R&D needs to meet the future challenges, Quality by Design (QbD) - A Modern System Approach to Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing - FDA Perspective, Patent Strategies for Indian Pharma Companies .

The theme of STREAM II was Emerging Trends in Pharmacy Practice which covered topics like Pharmacovigilance - Core value of Pharmacotherapy , Optimal Role of Pharmacist at Community Pharmacies in Asia, Rational Use of Medicines- Perception &Practice ,Management of CBRN Disaster: Role Pharmacists can play, Professional Practice Regulations.

The theme of STREAM III was Pharmacy Education : Assuring Quality & Competencies which covered topics like Two Perspectives on Professional Autonomy, Bridging the gap in Education : Collaborative efforts of Stakeholders and educators, Clinical Research - Ethics and Regulations, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Better Competence, Quality Assurance of Pharma D Education.

On 14th March, 2010, the session began with Plenary Lectures on Developing India as a global CRO base, Emerging Opportunities & Future trends for Exports & Developing Good Storage Practices. Simultaneous Poster session was conducted where 14 Oral presentation and 389 Poster presentation were made.

Parallel Business meetings of IPA Divisions were conducted by the respective Chairmen and Secretaries. IPA Presidents & Secretaries Meet and CEC meeting was conducted by Dr. B. Suresh where the incoming IPA President Dr. C. Gopalakrishna Murty and other office bearers were introduced.
