This Symposium was the 4th in the series of similar programs organized by Indian Pharmaceutical Association in the last decade. The 1st edition of this Symposium was organized way back in 1999, followed by the next one in 2004 & the 3rd edition just 2 years back in 2007. Having dealt with the basics of formulation technology & manufacture of nasal & pulmonary drug delivery systems in the earlier editions of the Symposium & keeping in view the interest shown by the Indian pharma companies for making forays into the regulated US & European markets,

Symposium was the workshops organized on Day 2, which gave the participants the opportunity for closer interaction & hands – on experience. The Symposium also had an exhibition & poster presentations by leading researchers from India & abroad, working in the area of nasal & pulmonary drug delivery.

Inhalers. The next talk of Dr. Jag Shur from University of Bath, UK, on “Material Characterisation of Orally inhaled drug products” was webcast live from UK. Mr. Harry Peters, Technical Sales Manager – Pharma, DOMO, next discussed the various complexities involved in use of carriers in DPIs. This was followed by a brilliant presentation on pMDI filling equipment for regulated & non-regulated markets, by Mr Paul Sullivan, Managing Director of DH Industries Ltd in the UK, part of the Pamasol organisation. Mr. Henrik Krarup, Innova Systems then continued with an outline of the regulatory issues with testing of spray pattern & plume geometry of nasal sprays & aerosols. The last session of the day was Mr. Matthias Birkhoff, Vice President, Marketing, Pfeiffer. Mr. Birkhoff discussed ways & means of developing preservative-free ophthalmic drug delivery systems.

Hendricker from Catalent Pharma Solutions, on the regulatory perspective on leachables & extractables. The last session of the Symposium was by Dr. Julie Suman, President, Next Breath. Dr. Suman discussed the technicalities of good regulatory submissions.

first prize was bagged by M.R. Babar, A.N. Bajaj, & R. S. Bhanushali for their paper “Rifampicin Pulmospheres for Pulmonary Delivery”. N. M Nirale, R. D Vidhate & M. S. Nagarsenker, received the second prize for their poster “Fluticasone Propionate Liposomes for Pulmonary Delivery”. The symposium had a very good reponse, with over 200 delegates from industry, regulatory & academia.
